Update from Superintendent Pires regarding the mask requirement at Medway High School. DESE is allowing schools with a vaccination rate of greater than 80% of all students and staff, to file for an exemption from the mask requirement. MHS has achieved a vaccination rate of 82%. At the School Committee meeting on 10/21, at Dr. Pires' recommendation, vote to move forward with the process to allow vaccinated students and staff to opt to no longer wear a mask with MHS, if certain conditions are met. School Committee vote to include five other conditions that must be met to implement the mask exemption.

We are excited to welcome Grades 1-12 students to the 2021-2022 school year tomorrow. Kindergarten Orientation is also planned to take place at the McGovern Elementary School and our Kindergarteners will start fully with us on Thursday, September 2. We spent the last two days with our faculty and staff who were engaged in professional development and student-centered conversations in preparation for this exciting beginning. The energy across the district was palpable. We have incredibly high hopes for the upcoming school year and with each of us doing our part to keep one another safe, we believe that we can experience a terrific year together. Superintendent's Update includes information pertaining to the Medway School Committee meeting on Thursday, August 19. At his recommendation, and with the support of the leadership team and the Medway Federation of Teachers, the Committee agreed to implement PK-12 universal masking for all staff and students for all indoor activities to start the school year, beginning on September 1. The presentation that Dr. Sherman, Director of Wellness, and I shared during the meeting can be found here.information and the link to the presentation by Dr. Sherman, Director of Wellness and Supt. Armand Pires at last Thursday's School Committee meeting. The update also shares a link to breaking news that was shared on Friday by DESE Commissioner, Jeff Riley in that he would be seeking the authority from the BOE to require universal masking for all of the Commonwealth's PK-12 children through at least October 1, 2021. A list of upcoming events was also shared which includes the first day of school for Grades 1-12 on Wednesday, September 1.

To be considered for the Integrated Preschool Lottery you must complete and submit either an electronic or paper-based lottery form by 12:00 PM on March 5th. Please note, completing the form does not guarantee entrance into the program. The lottery will be held on Monday, March 8 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. An email notification will be sent with the results of the lottery for your child. If you do not obtain a seat during the lottery process, you will be added to the waitlist.

Unfortunately, CVS does not provide the flu vaccine for children under the age of 9. Please schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. The flu clinic location is Medway High School, 88 Summer Street, Wednesday, October 7th. No appointment necessary! Show up any time between 2:00 p.m.& 6:00 p.m. Please remember to bring your insurance card and wear a mask.

All students (PK-12) will be required to have a device in school AND at home for virtual learning. Due to the national pandemic, the demand for these devices is high, and shipments to accomplish our 1:1 goals are not expected to arrive until sometime in the later Fall. We have already received a higher level of interest in devices than we currently have available and determined that we will not be able to meet the demands of all learners until supplies arrive. Update to share that the Medway School Committee, upon my recommendation, has voted to adjust the 2019-2020 school calendar. Based on feedback from families and staff, we will continue remote learning Tuesday, April 21-Friday, April 24, in lieu of April vacation. Please note that Monday, April 20 remains a no school day as it is a state holiday. Thank you to the many families who participated in our quick survey that resulted in an overwhelming consensus around continuing learning next week. Our last day of school will now be Thursday, June 19, 2020.

The news coverage of COVID-19 over the past few weeks and days has continued to escalate and has likely increased concern and anxiety among all of us. As reports have developed of new cases of the virus, we have been in regular communication with our local Board of Health, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Health and Human Alert Network to ensure that we are working with up to date information and recommendations.

We are excited to share that Medway Public Schools will be partnering with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to offer the State Seal of Biliteracy as a means to recognize high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a different world language. Specifically, proficiency means that students can function in both languages in authentic, real-life situations.
