On a spectacular Thursday night, in front of the Burke/Memorial Elementary School, a small crowd gathered to honor this year's Memorial Plaque Honorees: Alyssa Bruderek, Susan Dietrich, Chris McKnerney, and Paul Yorkis. Burke/Memorial Principal John Kelley and Armand Pires welcomed family, friends, and other community members. Medway High School student Amelia Dahiheimer beautifully sang the national anthem. In four extraordinary moments, Memorial student Josephine Johnson introduced award winner Alyssa Bruderek, Memorial student Niamh Petteruto introduced Susan Dietrich, Memorial student Vivan Pothu introduced Chris McKnerney, and Memorial student Luke McGrail introduced Paul Yorkis. Congratulations, and thank you all for your continued dedication to the community.

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive function skills like impulse control, decision-making, and problem-solving, is the last to develop into the early 20s. Do not expect perfection, yet encourage these skills in teens as their brain develops to build a vital "executive function" muscle.

Key to substance use prevention is talking openly with our students and helping them understand the impact of substance abuse on their health. Studies show that the earlier an individual starts smoking, drinking, or using other drugs, the greater the likelihood of developing an addiction. The risk of addiction and substance abuse decreases yearly, and substance use is delayed during adolescent brain development. If you or a loved one is struggling, we want to remind you of Care Solace, a complimentary service available to the Medway Public Schools community. To find a substance use treatment or mental health care provider to help you through your challenges, contact Care Solace at 888-515-0595.

The Medway Foundation for Education has provided grants to fund innovative programs, events, and educational support to teachers and students in Medway since 2002! Did you know the MFE funded or helped fund the kiln used to make the ceramic tiles students design, the beautiful new Me on the Map mural at Burke-Memorial, and the fantastic new performance piano at the high school? And that MFE also funded the Lost Boys of Sudan event, Remembering Auschwitz Virtual Tour, and the inaugural year of the Financial Literacy Fair and STEM Saturday for Girls? MFE is a quiet but powerful resource for our schools, students, and teachers. BUT MFE needs help. Most Board members have been involved for many years; our kids have graduated or are in high school. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help us hold events (Dodgeball, Trivia Bee, and more) and raise funds to keep funding future grants. You can join our Board (which meets quarterly to plan events and review and vote on grant proposals) or help with fundraising and events. Are you a social media guru? We could use that assistance as well. Anyone in the community is welcome, but we’re especially seeking input and assistance from parents of those in K-8. Feel free to reach out to anyone on the Board for more information! https://www.mfeducation.org/
